windmill, windmill for the land.. is everybody in?
the 2nd album by gorillaz, demon days, came out on 24 may, and i must say it’s amazing.
some of you might be familiar with the 1st single “feel good inc.” because it’s used in the latest ipod advert. the song is sometimes delicate, sometimes funky, thanks to de la soul’s contribution. if you haven’t seen the video, you must watch it. the animation is fantastic. the world in the video is so gritty, but so beautiful.
this album is darker than the 1st album, but it does have an optimistic ending. i really like the variety of all the tracks. “dirty harry” brings to mind hip-hop from the early days of the genre, like “the message” by grandmaster flash. “fire coming out of the monkey’s head” is strange, in that it’s mostly dennis hopper talking, but it is actually a great song. i love listening to it whilst driving. “all alone” is quirky and includes vocals from roots manuva and martina topley-bird; parts of it kinda make me think of music 1 of my ex-boyfriends would write with his gameboy. whenever i hear “dare” i just want to get up and dance around. i want to have a dance party specifically so i can play that song. “don’t get lost in heaven” and “demon days” are part of the optimistic ending i was talking about. they’re both kind of sad but lovely. all the other songs are fantastic, too. i love the album, and i’ve been listening to it far too much.
