polka!
on saturday night, carol & i met up for dinner with a couple of the boys from her class, skillz [nick] & jason. then we all headed out to the south side of chicago to go to a polka club out by midway. yes, i said polka.
i personally prefer unique and amusing experiences that will at least give you a good story to tell, rather than just going to the latest trendy place, which sounds dreadfully boring.
anyhoo, after taking the train and a bus out to central avenue, we had to walk along the gigantic, white dividing wall that keeps people from running out onto midway’s runway. we finally came across a small old building that had the same address as was listed in carol’s guide book; however, a sign proclaiming the place to be the baby doll polka club was never seen.
when we walked in to the club, everyone turned and looked at us. that is because everyone else was 40–60 years old, and here we were—four 20somethings—strutting in. the decor was very familiar to me; if you’ve ever been to the bloomfield bridge tavern in pittsburgh, you would feel the same way. the baby doll even has the same sort of strange mirrored tiles covering the walls. i wouldn’t call the decor tacky, but it isn’t stylish. it’s as though the club is sort of lost in time, but no one seems to mind. we certainly didn’t.
the 4 of us found a table and got situated. unfortunately on this night, there was not a live polka band, but we did have a dj who kept talking in polish. he played not only traditional polka music, but also polish techno and even other random stuff, such as j.lo, t.a.t.u., and some club-ish techno/pop songs that only skillz recognised.
we had loads fun dancing. old polish men kept asking carol & me to dance, and finally i broke down and danced with this guy who was wearing a hawaiian shirt. he barely spoke english, but he was very polite and knew his dance moves. i stepped on his feet a few times, but he didn’t seem to mind.
so if you’re looking for a polka club in chicago, go to the baby doll polka club at 6102 south central avenue. i promise you’ll have an amazingly good time.
