the restaurant chicago looks up to
on friday night, carol & i had reservations at the signature room at the ninety-fifth, which—as you may guess—is on the 95th floor of the john hancock building. on our way, we had possibly the dumbest cabbie in all of chicago because he didn’t know where the hancock building was, and we were already on michigan avenue. we just said “drive straight” and had to tell him when to stop. it’s so sad, it’s funny.
we thankfully were given a window table, and so we were able to completely enjoy the sparkly city below. at 1 point, lakeshore was backed up and there were police and a fire truck on the road, but no apparent accident. to make things even stranger, there were also a couple of police helicopters scouring over the lake. this lasted for a while and eventually just stopped. we have no clue what was going down, so if you saw anything in the news, let me know.
dinner was delightful. the food was tasty, and our waiters were super attentive. they were so swift in refilling our water glasses that carol & i expected them to rappel down from the ceiling—ninja-style—refill our glasses, then ascend unnoticed.
for the meal, i started off with a spinach, pear & walnut salad; carol had the lobster bisque. for her entrée, carol had a steak that she enjoyed. [don’t ask me what kind of steak; as a vegetarian, it’s all the same to me.] for my main course, our waiter had the chef make a vegetable plate, which was overall delicious, except that the mushrooms were a bit to salty for my tastes. however, the garlic mashed potatoes, carrots and tomatoes were top.
for dessert, carol & i both had the molten chocolate cake with caramel ice cream and banana emulsion. it was fabulous. the perfect ending to such a nice meal.

would this be a good place to have a reunion dinner?

yes, i would say so. it's a little pricey, but carol & i definitely had a great time there. plus it was fun to be looking out over the whole city while dining.
