and before us grew the angry jaws of a giant whale

tonight i went to see the decemberists at the tabernacle. i wasn’t familiar with any of their songs, but i had heard of the band and had a hankerin’ to go to a gig, so i figured i’d check them out. the show ended up being a lot of fun. their songs are a mixture of indie, pop and folk, and the quirky lyrics are about a wide variety of topics, from military wives to politics to kids who would rather study than play sports. in a way, their music seems intellectual and nerdy, and i mean that in a completely positive way.

since i’m not really familiar with all of the decemberists’ songs, i can’t give you a complete playlist, but i know they played most of the songs off of their new album, picaresque. during “the mariner’s revenge song” we all had to scream like we were being swallowed by a whale. colin, the lead singer/songwriter, made us practise before the song started. apparently we weren’t sounding realistic because he said, “no, not like you’re riding a rollercoaster! like you’re being swallowed by a whale! throw in some moans!”
