eating in athens

this past weekend i went to athens to visit kate. she is 1 of my favourite people to eat with—not only because she is my best friend—but because she enjoys food like i do, likes a wide variety of cuisines, and is also a vegetarian.

saturday we had lunch at barberitos, a mexican chain that has several locations in athens and other locations elsewhere in eastern georgia. it wasn’t a proper sit-down restaurant, but it was nicer than fast food. although kate told me that barberitos has yummy tofu, i’ve been on a cheese quesadilla kick recently, so that’s what i ordered. it was grilled almost just right: the tortilla was crispy yet soft. it was perhaps a little greasier than i prefer, but still tasty. also, the accompanying pico de gallo was nice and fresh.

saturday night we enjoyed dinner at last resort grill. we sat outside on their little patio area, which was nice because inside it was very loud. i liked the atmosphere of the restaurant; it was contemporary and interesting without seeming trendy.

we started off our meal with house salads and a warm baguette. i had sundried tomato vinaigrette on my salad, and it was tasty and summery. for her entrée, kate ordered the vegetable patch, which included various vegetables, such as portobello and carrots, on a bed of mashed potatoes. i ordered the vegetable pasta, which had a a zesty cream sauce that wasn’t heavy at all. my pasta was delicious, and it was very hot, which is the way pasta should be eaten. kate and i ended our meal with the bailey’s chocolate layer cake. despite only being able to taste the chocolate and not the bailey’s, the cake was still good. it was moist and fluffy, plus the meringue frosting was extremely light and not too sweet.

for sunday brunch we went to big city bread. it reminded me of all the other bakery cafés i’ve been to, but i mean that in a good way because i love bakery cafés.

while we sat outside on big city bread’s nicely shaded patio, i enjoyed my continental breakfast of grits, yogurt, a biscuit and chocolate milk. i’m used to hominy [white] grits; i don’t believe i’ve ever had corn [yellow] grits before. they were good, although a little drier than hominy grits. even though i liked my grits and yogurt, the best part of my brunch was definitely the biscuit. it was probably the biggest biscuit i have ever seen, and it was fabulous: perfectly moist and just buttery enough.
