good things coming out of canada

jimmy made me watch the latest episode of command n because they filmed at centennial college in toronto, which is where degrassi high was filmed for 2 years.

for those of you who aren’t in the know~ degrassi is an amazing canadian show. it all started off in 1979 with the kids of degrassi street, which was about kids in elementary school. some of the actors from this show continued on to degrassi junior high and degrassi high in the mid-80s and early 90s, but they played different characters than they did in the 1st series. these 3 series were followed by school’s out, a made-for-tv movie about the degrassi gang during the summer after their high school graduation. then in 1992 degrassi talks, a short series in which the degrassi actors interviewed real kids about issues that teens have to deal with, came out. i grew up watching the various degrassi series, so when in 2001 degrassi: the next generation started, i was excited. yes, i am 23, and 1 of the 4 tv shows i watch is about canadian kids in high school. [the other 3: 24, the oc, and the apprentice.] i think 1 of the reasons i like degrassi so much is because i grew up watching the older series, and degrassi: tng even features some of the actors from the original series, such as joey, snake and spike. the biggest tie-in to the old series is that emma, spike’s daughter, is now attending degrassi. also, the drama of degrassi just keeps me hooked. i know it’s a little unrealistic because most high school students’ lives aren’t as complicated and busy as the degrassi kids, but i’ll take a little canadian melodrama over american cheesiness [like saved by the bell] any day.

the ska/punk band skankin’ pickle has a song called “i’m in love with a girl named spike” that starts off with a few bars of the canadian national anthem. how awesome is that?

another note about the command n episode: they mentioned the website typetester on which you can quickly test out what typefaces will look like on screen, and you can specify size, leading, colour, etc. it’s a handy little tool for web designers.

i don’t write love songs / in fact they make me very sick / but spike, the girl from degrassi high / she’s truly one cool chick
