happy birthday, dudley
today would’ve been dudley’s 9th birthday, so today’s been tough because it’s the first 26th september since he passed away. how i wish that i was busy baking an apple pie today for the birthday boy. [dudley loved apples, and he would practically climb in your lap if you were eating 1.]
in honour of dudley’s birthday, here are a few fun dudley memories:
one time my mom was making garlic bread, and she has the bread all buttered and garlicky, sitting on a baking sheet on the counter, waiting for the oven to warm up. my mom left the kitchen for a moment, and when she came back, the whole first row of garlic bread was missing! elwood was elsewhere in the house, so we knew it was dudley. another time he stole a stick of butter and ate the whole thing—wrapper and all. we couldn’t believe that a basset hound could get food off of the counter, but dudley was an incredible jumper before he got sick.
my family always talks about how smart dudley was, and there is 1 instance that definitely proves us right. we have an intercom built into the phone system in our house. so 1 day, my parents kind of jokingly intercommed throughout the whole house, saying, “paging dudley, please come up to the kitchen.” lo and behold, dudley showed up in the kitchen, even though he had been downstairs! we couldn’t believe it, but dudley never failed to amaze and amuse us.
dudley was the best. to me, he was the epitome of a basset hound, in looks—perfect length ears, shape head, size of paws, etc—and stubbornness. i miss him everyday, and it still hurts so much that he’s gone, but i wouldn’t trade the 8 years and 9 months i had with him for anything. i know he’s in a better place now and is no longer suffering, but i still miss him.
today i’ve just been telling myself that fred, rocky and oreo are throwing a party for dudley, complete with apple pie. i’d hate for him to not get to celebrate his birthday.
i love you, dudley. happy birthday, my rocket scientist puppy.
