pumpkin pie day

happy thanksgiving! i hope everyone is celebrating the day with family and friends. since there is skepticism about whether or not the 1st thanksgiving was really a happy time [see lies my teacher told me, chapter 3 for more details], i think it’s best to celebrate the holiday not thinking about pilgrims or indians or any of that. it’s better to not get wrapped up in what is perhaps a national myth; instead enjoy the food and the company.

as a vegetarian, i certainly don’t chow down on turkey on this day. my family is always really considerate in making sure that our thanksgiving meal is vegetarian-friendly. the turkey is carved in the kitchen before the meal begins and served in slices on a platter so that i don’t have to look at a turkey corpse while i’m eating. also, we have stuffing that contains no animal products and is cooked outside of the turkey. we also always have lots of veggies as side dishes. really, besides the turkey, our meal is completely vegetarian.

if you are a vegetarian or vegan or if you’re a non-vegetarian who will be having vegetarian guests at thanksgiving, this article has some recipes and some good tips.

on a somewhat related note, the other day my dad sent me this article from cornell, which talks about how inefficient the production of grain-fed animal protein is. not only is animal agriculture inefficient, it is 1 of the leading consumers of water resources in the united states, plus it increases soil erosion. even if you couldn’t care less about animal rights or your health, the article still gives you something to think about.
