couch surfing
want to travel somewhere, but want to go on the cheap? that isn’t necessarily easy if you’re flying to a far off destination because then your plane ticket alone could easily cost you $500 or more. so unless you have loads of skymiles or a friend who works at delta and can give you buddy passes, you’re usually stuck paying several hundred dollars for your plane fare. to save money you could barely eat while you’re on holiday, but part of the fun of visiting another culture is trying out the food [especially if you’re a foodie like me]. you could stay at a hostel to cut down on the cost of your lodging, but what’s even better than the price of a hostel? free.
thanks to the site couchsurfing.com, you can meet people in other countries who are willing to let you crash on their couch [or in their guest room or in a tent in the backyard] for free. this sounds like a great way to not only pay absolutely nothing for your accommodations, but to also really dive into another culture. some people might think this doesn’t sound very safe, but members are vouched for and/or verified.
there are couch surfers in 173 different countries, so you could find a sofa to crash on just about anywhere in the world. i’d really like to try this sometime because couch surfing seems like a great way to meet people and to really get to know another culture. and i’m definitely all about being a traveller and not a tourist.
