degrassi~!

when jimmy & i decided that we were going to toronto, i told him that the only thing i really wanted to do was go to de grassi street. i know that the majority of degrassi was/is filmed on sound stages; however, the street is real and there are indeed some real places where the show has been filmed.

our 1st stop was centennial college [951 carlaw] because degrassi high was filmed here for 2 years. now, i haven’t seen an episode of degrassi high or junior high in quite a while, so centennial and the other places i visited only looked vaguely familiar. it was still exciting though because i loved degrassi growing up. [and—i’ll admit it—i love the new degrassi, too.]

next we went to degrassi street. actually it’s de grassi street; i’m not sure why they omitted the space for the name of the show. it’s a nice mostly residential street. it reminded me of a lot of residential streets in other northern cities: rowhouses and small yards. i even picked out the house where i would live, #62 de grassi street.

jimmy & i walked the whole length of de grassi, which isn’t too terribly long. we looked for the de grassi grocery [featured in the kids of degrassi street] at the corner of de grassi and cummings, but now it’s a new, small, yellow-ish office building.

once we walked all the way down de grassi street, we hit queen street. 932 queen street east is home of the fictional restaurant 13 busy st. where caitlin once poured a coke on joey’s head. in reality this spot is a pub called velvet.

heading the other direction down queen, we passed the broadview health clinic at 791 queen east, which is where spike found out she was pregnant.

i certainly enjoyed my walk down de grassi street and my visits to the various degrassi-related locations. 1 thing i love about canadians is that i can mention degrassi to them, and they actually know what i’m talking about [unlike americans]. at the techtv meet-up i told mikey that i was dragging jimmy to de grassi street the next day, and we immediately bonded over our love for degrassi new & old.
