there’s more to toronto than degrassi
even though lots of snow fell on toronto on thursday right before we arrived, it barely snowed during the rest of our visit. instead it was just very cold and windy off & on. despite the delays at the airport, the city did look pretty all coated with snow.
on friday night amber and her housemate jenna hosted a holiday party for some of their friends and some people from the techtv meet-up. geeky topics were discussed, cheesecake was eaten, and a good time was had.
on saturday a big group of us went to see king kong. it wasn’t a movie i was dying to see, but everyone else wanted to see it, so i tagged along. i ended up really enjoying it; the movie was a good combination of action, drama, romance with touches of comedy and of course stellar animation. and i’ll confess: i did well up a little at the end.
after dinner on saturday, we went to the social with some of the kids from command n, hak.5 and wasd.tv. we had actually tried to go to a couple other places before we ended up there, but they were full of reservations. and even at the social, we were told that the couches were reserved for later in the evening. i’ve never been to a bar where they said they had some reservations, so that was a bit strange. thankfully we were never kicked off the couches though. once the place got a bit more crowded, the dj started playing better music, including some great songs from the 80s. even though the dance floor was crowded and full of people just standing, i couldn’t resist popping down there when the dj played “true faith.” new order, yum.

afterwards we stopped by squirley’s for tea and coffee. squirley’s has a great back room with asian prints on the wall. it kind of looked like a dive, but i think that’s why i liked it. on our way to squirley’s, amber, jimmy and darren decided that rolling down a snow-covered hill was a good idea. i was wearing a skirt [like i do everyday], so i decided to abstain. jimmy forgot to zip up his coat pocket before rolling down the hill, so we ended our evening by heading back over to the hill and searching around for his mobile [found], change [partially found] and ttc tokens [lost forever… or at least until the snow melts].
on sunday after we had brunch with mikey, jimmy & i walked around queen street west, checking out the various artsy shops. the most fun and interesting place we went to was the knit cafe. there you can buy needles & gorgeous yarn, take knitting classes, or have a tea/coffee, relax and knit. if i lived in toronto, i would definitely visit the knit cafe often.
