If you have a large family I recommend tripling the recipe as the cookies must be on the large side in order to hold the life-saver.

Ingredients
2/3 cup shortening
3/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 egg
2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt (optional)
4 rolls multi-colored Life Savers candies
Directions
When ready to bake, preheat oven to 375 degrees and line cookie pans with parchment paper.
Thoroughly cream shortening, sugar and vanilla. Add egg; beat until fluffy.
Sift together flour, baking powder and salt; blend into creamed mixture.
Divide dough in half. Chill for 1 hour.
On lightly floured surface; roll dough 1/8 inch thick.
Cut into desired shapes with cookie cutters.
Cut Life-Saver sized hole in centre of cookie, place a life-saver in the centre of each cookie.
Bake for 6-10 minutes.
Cool slightly, remove cookies from pan.
