This recipe is probably about 75 years old or older. It was my Grandmothers. the family loves it so much that it is our only recipe for Banana Nut Bread. It has lots of wonderful flavors.

Ingredients

1 egg
2 Tbsp. butter or margarine
1 cup sugar
1 cup mashed bananas (use food processor)
½ cup buttermilk
3 cups flour
½ tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
½ cup chopped nuts (walnuts)
1- 14 ounce jar maraschino cherries chopped (no stems)
All the juice from the cherries
½ cup chopped dates

Directions

  1. Line the bottoms of the loaf pans with wax paper. ( use the bottom of a pan to trace the size of the pan on the paper). DO NOT OMIT this step!

  2. Spray the sides & bottom of the pans with cooking spray. Spray the bottom of the pan before & after you have put the wax paper in the bottom of the pan.

  3. Mix all the ingredients together. Batter will be very thick. Fill pans 2/3 full. Let pans stand for 10 minutes before baking.

  4. Bake in 350 degree oven for 1 hour. Cool 10 minutes before removing from pans. Remove wax paper before serving or slicing..

  5. Serve plain, with butter. toasted or with cream cheese.
